Are Cookware Sets Dishwasher Safe?

Updated on · By the SpiffyHaul team

A cookware set is dishwasher safe when its maker approves it for machine washing, but individual pieces may have exceptions. Check the care instructions for pots, pans, lids and utensils separately, especially in mixed sets.

A pots and pans set is dishwasher safe when its maker approves it for machine washing, but individual pieces may have exceptions. Check the care instructions for the pots, frying pans, lids and utensils separately, especially when a set mixes stainless steel and nonstick cookware.

“Dishwasher safe” is not a rule for every pan made from the same material. The construction, coating, handles and lids can change how a piece should be cleaned.

How can you tell if a pots and pans set is dishwasher safe?

Check the care guide or a dishwasher-safe mark before loading the set. Whirlpool also advises checking the maker’s instructions because cookware materials have different cleaning needs.

How to check if your pots and pans set is dishwasher safe

Read the instructions for each kind of piece in the box. A single set can include stainless steel saucepans, nonstick frying pans, glass lids and nylon tools.

Use this quick check:

  1. Find the care instructions for the exact model.
  2. Check the pots and saucepans.
  3. Check coated and uncoated frying pans separately.
  4. Confirm whether the lids and utensils can go in the dishwasher.
  5. Follow any rack, cycle or detergent directions in your dishwasher manual.

Do not treat “stainless steel set” or “hard-anodized set” as a complete washing instruction. If you are still choosing a material, our complete cookware set guide explains the main differences.

Which dishwasher-safe cookware sets fit this need?

Cuisinart and Rachael Ray offer dishwasher-safe cookware in the sets below. The Farberware set also allows dishwasher cleaning, but excludes its nonstick frying pans.

The Cuisinart Chef's Classic 11-Piece Stainless Set has stainless steel cookware with aluminum-encapsulated bases. It includes 1.5- and 2.5-quart covered saucepans, a covered 3-quart pan with a helper handle, an 8-quart covered stockpot, 8- and 10-inch skillets, and a 7.08-inch steamer insert.

Cuisinart marks the set dishwasher safe. It is also compatible with gas, glass-ceramic and induction cooktops, which makes it useful if dishwasher care and broad stove fit both matter.

The Rachael Ray Cucina Hard-Anodized 12-Piece Set uses hard-anodized aluminum with nonstick interiors. It includes 1- and 2-quart covered saucepans, a 6-quart covered stockpot, 8.5- and 10-inch frying pans, a 3-quart covered sauté pan and two nylon utensils.

Rachael Ray marks the cookware dishwasher safe. The set works on electric, glass-ceramic and gas cooktops, but not induction.

The Farberware Classic 15-Piece Stainless Set combines stainless steel pots with two nonstick frying pans. It has 1-, 2- and 3-quart covered saucepans, a covered 4-quart saucepot, a covered 8-quart stockpot, 8- and 10-inch frying pans, and three nylon utensils.

Farberware says the cookware is dishwasher safe except for the nonstick frying pans. That exception makes it a good example of why one care rule may not cover every piece.

If piece counts are confusing, see what comes in a 10-, 12- or 17-piece cookware set. Lids and utensils count toward the total, so the number does not equal the number of pots and pans.

Are stainless steel cookware sets dishwasher safe?

Stainless steel cookware sets can be dishwasher safe, but the maker’s instructions decide. Both the Cuisinart and Farberware stainless steel pots above are approved for dishwasher cleaning.

A stainless steel label does not mean every item in the box is uncoated stainless steel. The Farberware set includes two nonstick frying pans that should be hand washed even though the steel cookware can go in the machine.

Water spots or dull marks can remain after a cycle even when the cookware is dishwasher safe. Drying the pieces after washing can help you catch trapped water around rims, handles and lid knobs.

Is hard-anodized nonstick cookware dishwasher safe?

Hard-anodized nonstick cookware can be dishwasher safe when the maker specifically allows it. Rachael Ray approves the Cucina cookware for dishwasher use, while other coated pans may carry different instructions.

“Hard-anodized” describes the treated aluminum body, not one universal care rule. The coating and handle construction still matter, so check the exact model rather than applying the Cucina instructions to another set.

Hand washing remains an option for approved cookware when the load is crowded or the pan needs a gentle soak. Use the care method the maker permits and avoid assuming that a stronger cycle is better.

How should pots and pans be loaded in a dishwasher?

Place large cookware where it can face the water without stopping the spray arms. GE advises putting heavily soiled pots and pans in the lower rack with their open sides facing the wash source in its dishwasher loading guidance.

Do not nest pans tightly together. Water and detergent need a clear path to the cooking surfaces, and a tall stockpot can block water from reaching other items.

Before starting the cycle:

  • Remove large food scraps.
  • Put heavy cookware securely in the lower rack.
  • Angle open sides toward the water source.
  • Turn the spray arms by hand to check for contact.
  • Keep handles from dropping through the rack.
  • Follow the dishwasher manual for detergent and cycle choice.

Glass lids need stable placement so they cannot move during the wash. If a lid does not sit securely in your racks, wash it by hand rather than forcing it into a crowded load.

When is hand washing the better choice?

Hand washing is required when the maker excludes a piece from dishwasher care. It is also the practical choice when cookware blocks the spray arms, does not sit securely or has food that needs soaking first.

The Farberware nonstick frying pans are the clearest example here. Wash those by hand while putting the approved stainless steel pieces in the dishwasher.

Mixed care does not make a set poor. It simply adds a sorting step after cooking, which may matter if easy cleanup is one of your main buying goals.

Care habits can also affect how soon a set needs replacement. Our guide to how long cookware sets last explains what to watch for as pots, pans and coatings age.

Does dishwasher safe also mean oven safe?

No, dishwasher safe and oven safe are separate claims. Dishwasher approval covers cleaning, while oven approval has its own temperature limit.

Cuisinart gives an oven limit of 500°F for its cookware, Rachael Ray gives 400°F and Farberware gives 350°F. Check the instructions for individual lids and accessories before oven use, since a cookware limit does not establish a limit for every included piece.

Check both rules before you buy if you want cookware that moves from the stovetop to the oven and then into the dishwasher. Our oven-safe cookware set guide explains how to read those limits.

Choosing a dishwasher-safe pots and pans set

Choose the Cuisinart Chef's Classic 11-Piece Stainless Set if you want dishwasher-safe stainless steel with induction compatibility. Choose the Rachael Ray Cucina Hard-Anodized 12-Piece Set if you want dishwasher-safe hard-anodized nonstick cookware and do not use induction.

Choose the Farberware Classic 15-Piece Stainless Set if its mix of stainless steel pots and nonstick frying pans suits you, and you do not mind hand washing the frying pans. For more factors beyond cleanup, read how to choose a cookware set.

Frequently asked questions

Can stainless steel cookware go in the dishwasher?

Stainless steel cookware can go in the dishwasher when its maker marks it dishwasher safe. Check the care instructions for the pots, pans and lids, since a set may also include nonstick pieces or other materials that have different washing rules.

Can nonstick pots and pans go in the dishwasher?

Some nonstick cookware is dishwasher safe, but the coating alone does not answer the question. Rachael Ray marks the Cucina hard-anodized nonstick cookware dishwasher safe, while Farberware recommends hand washing the two nonstick frying pans in its Classic set.

What does dishwasher safe mean for cookware?

Dishwasher safe means the maker allows that item to be cleaned in a dishwasher. It does not tell you that every piece in a mixed cookware set has the same care rule, so check the pots, frying pans, lids and utensils separately.

Should you rinse pots and pans before the dishwasher?

Remove large scraps and follow your dishwasher manual before loading cookware. You usually do not need to scrub away every trace of food first, but dried or burned food may need soaking so it does not remain on the pan after the cycle.
